Lithuania. Where to go, what to look in Lithuania .

 

Lithuania is located in the geographical centre of Europe. In Lithuania ,  buildings that represent the beautiful southern and western European styles of architecture, Gothic  ,Renaissance, Baroque, and Classicism are situated    .



In Lithuania you will be able to see and hear  pieces of art created by Lithuanian artists of different periods that have fascinated art lovers and professionals from various countries. The most popular places are Art Gallery Arka  and  Lithuanian Art Museum (Vilnius).

There are five historically formed ethnographic regions of Lithuania- Highlands, Samogitia, Dainava Land of Songs, Sudovia, and Lithuania Minor .

Highlands and Kaunas the largest ethnographic region of Lithuania situated in the northeastern and eastern part of Lithuania. The  centre of the region is Panevezyz. The Lithuanian state originates from the Duchy which has arisen approximately in the 11th century.

Samogitia  is situated in the current northwestern part of Lithuania. The  city of Telsiai is considered to be the capital of Samogitia with Varniai as its second largest city. Among all ethnic groups of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania it was alone that enjoyed the rights of an independent eldership valid almost for 400 years.

Suvalkija- also referred to as Sudovia is situated in the southwestern part of  Lithuania. It is separated from other regions by the river Nemunas. The centre of  Suvalkija is Marijampole. Due to  fertile soil favourable  for agriculture - the residents of the region is ones of  the wealthiest farmers of Lithuania .

Dainava and Vilnius is situated in the southeastern part of Lithuania between the Nemunas and the Neris rivers. In the13th century this was the location of Dainava land. The name Dainava emerged in the 19th century in Lithuanian literature due to the peculiar dialect of the   regional people.

Lithuania Minor covers the western part of Lithuania including the Curonian Spit,Silute and Klaipeda Districts and the southern part of Taurage Country.

The Curonian Spit- a masterpiece of the UNESCO World Heritage with its overwhelming harmony of sand, forest, and water is one  of the most beautiful European landscapes.
